Don Perkins, CFI, shared his experience in large loss fires at the February CCCA luncheon. Though he was unable to discuss the Santana Row Fires, the investigation in which we was involved, he took the group on a journey of how investigators deal with such circumstances.

The CCCA is a nice place to hang out.

Don't look and maybe he won't take our picture.

Ken Pierce was the lucky winner of the sizable 50/50 raffle drawing. Congrats Ken!

The spectacular grandeur of a large fire will almost always take top story on the nightly news. Few words are needed when good video captures the blaze. In passing, the reporter or news anchor will undoubtedly state the estimated damage, and note the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Leading that investigations, often times, is none other than CCCA Past President (1996) Don Perkins, of Fire Cause Analysis. Don spoke to the February gathering of the CCCA in San Jose. He shared with the group a presentation that included a look at how investigators go about sifting through the usually water-drenched remnants to unveil the story of what occurred. Determining the cause and origin of a fire, though a very methodical and scientific procedure, can be a tricky endeavor. Don has been called to travel to many lands around the world to bring his expertise to the situation.

A retired San Jose Fire Captain, Don Perkins gave 28 years to the service of the department. He's had extensive experience beyond that in the realm of cause and origin, as well.

Most recently, Don was heavily involved in the investigation of the infamous Santana Row fires. He was unfortunately not at liberty to discuss much of anything about those cases, as the whole thing is still in litigation. Perhaps he'll give us a follow-up review on that when the time is appropriate.

That aside, his February presentation was well orchestrated, professionally put together, most informative, and quite entertaining. The insight as to how departments work in places like New Zealand and Guam was fascinating.

A crowd of more than 50 turned out for the February luncheon.
