Earthquakes in California are as natural and expected as the vast vineyards found all around the Northern part of the state. Preparing for the next big one is not only prudent, but a very necessary aspect of the job for both property and liability claims professionals.
Addressing this reality at the January 18, 2007 CCCA luncheon meeting was CSE Property Region Director, Mr. Kelly Taylor.
Mr. Taylor began with direction. He described a likely chaotic scenario following a major earthquake.
“It’s important to give your insured an ear - make sure they’re ok, and let them talk,” he said. “Take pictures of damage, take pictures if there’s no damage.
“Let people know you’re in charge,” he further stated. “Be prepared to help them,” he encouraged. “They will need your strength.”
A long-time veteran of the insurance claims handling business, Mr. Taylor has seen many changes over the years. The current state of claims, he said “sucks!”
Things have changed, he explained. “I encourage you to get some passion. That’s what’s missing.” He continued, saying, “We need good adjusters. Education,” he elaborated, “will be a big key in the future.”
He also encouraged all claims people to “Have as many vendor resources as you can. Don’t get locked into just one.”
Mr. Taylor solicited the perspectives of other claims people in the room, including Dale Mendez, of CSAA, and CCCA Vice President Ann Marie Yadegar, of The Hartford.
