Roofing material has been evolving since whenever humans first left caves and began building shelter over their heads. Finding a secure material that will last, is dependable, and safe to live under presents many challenges, even today.

“As asbestos has been removed from all legal roofing materials, there have been numerous attempts at finding an adequate replacement,” said Andrew Lawler, of Independent Roof Inspections, Inc. Mr. Lawler was speaking before the February 15, 2007 luncheon gathering of the Central Coast Claims Association, an audience representing a considerable blend of insurance claims adjusters and contractors who deal with this issue on a regular basis.

Lawler gave a thorough presentation on benefits and drawbacks of a wide variety of most commonly used roofing applications. From ceramic tile,“one of the first roofing products”, to wood shake to concrete tile, and many more, he detailed issues he finds on site with each.

Andrew Lawler and his wife, Karen, run Independent Roof Inspection, Inc. from their location in Grass Valley, going pretty much wherever the job takes them. Lawler’s commitment is to inspect each building from a neutral standpoint. “One of the biggest problems in dealing with insureds,” he stated, “ is that we’re the bad guy (in their eyes) before we ever get there.”

He expressed that, often, old failing product, or a roof that was put on wrong in the first place, is the cause of their damages, rather than the result from an insurable event. Not something most people are looking to hear.

Mr. Lawler’s presentation was thorough, candid, and very informative.
